To reach the 90-mile-wide path of totality, we took a 3-hour bus from Cartagena to Mangangue, then a 2-hour boatride up the Magdalena River to Mompos.  During the 1800s, Mompos was a major river port--until the river got too shallow and traffic took another route.  Now it is somewhat touristy, its former wealth well preserved, more horses than cars in the streets, and 8 churches for a town of just 25,000.
